At the request of a number of Church authorities, this training day has been organised specifically for leaders of Church bodies across Ireland to induct them into their strategic role in relation to child safegaurding.
This training was previously faciliated in February 2023.
The day will cover a range of topics relating to safeguarding including:
- The strategic role of the Church authority in relation to safeguarding.
- Pastoral ministry and safeguarding.
Please note if you have already attended this training previously you do not need to attend again.

This training course is only for those wishing to become registered as trainers for three years with the NBSCCCI. The training will be delivered over 6 days in the Glenroyal Hotel, Maynooth, County Kildare and structured as follows:
- 20/01/2024 and 21/01/2024 (both days starting at 10:00 and finishing at 16:30)- context, group work skills and facilitation skills.
- 26/01/2024, 27/01/2024 and 28/01/2024 (each day starting at 10:00 and finishing at 16:00)- delivering the safeguarding children programme.
- 02/03/2024 (9:30 until 16:00)- assessment of each trainer by a tutor from the NBSCCCI and their peers. The criteria for assessment which will be used during this session can be accessed here.
- Additional Date- Final assessment of the trainer by a tutor registered with the NBSCCCI at a date a time that suits the trainer. The criteria for assessment which will be used during the community assessment can be accessed here.
- Each applicant must attend all days to complete the course.
Price for this course excludes accommodation and is priced at 1250 euro per person. Full price to be paid on completion of the course.

3. Each applicant must print out and complete this registration form (this includes a section to be completed by their Church Authority). This training course will be facilitated by Rev Dr Barry O’Sullivan (bio available here). The course is open to any member of Church safeguarding personnel who want to understand more fully the place of safeguarding as a ministry in the theology and social teaching of the Church. The course will cover the following:
- Exploring the place of safeguarding in theology, social teaching and gospel.
- Discussing the challenges we face as a Church today in living out a theology of safeguarding.
- Discussing how to overcome the challenges we face to practice safeguarding as a ministry and follow the example set by Jesus.
This training course will include Mass in the middle of the day. The liturgy will reflect the themes explored during the course. Should any cleric wish to concelebrate with Fr Barry, please let us know by contacting acunningham@safeguarding.ie and ensure you bring a valid celebret/letter of good standing along with an alb.

The purpose of this training day is to influence good child safeguarding practice amongst Irish missionaries who engage with children in an international context. The aim is to ensure that anywhere that Irish missionaries minister to children, that the safety and wellbeing of children will be prioritised and promoted.
The day will include information and presentations on
- Template policies and procedures for safeguarding children internationally.
- Information and advice on governance
- Information and advice on embedding a culture of safeguarding including training.
This course is designed for Church authorities and Church personnel who have international ministries.

His Grace, Archbishop Dermot Farrell is hosting an Ecclesiastical Provincial Area Meeting on the 23rd of November 2023 assisted by the National Office for Safeguarding Children.
The purpose of the event is for staff from the National Office to meet with bishops, provincials, superiors and designated liaison people (DLPs) from dioceses, religious congregations and orders across the Dublin ecclesiastical province area, to discuss common issues of interest, and to consider how further improvements in safeguarding practice can be made.
A letter of invitation will be sent to Church authorities(both diocesan and male and female religious) for Church bodies in the ecclesiastical area.
